What
I Get Out Of My Involvement with CYO
Lindsay Wolrige
I
consider it a privilege to have been invited to be part of a multidisciplinary research
organization. My formal education finished forty years ago and it is wonderful to
be associated with academics who enthusiastically share their knowledge.
For
me the quantum leap from livestock reproduction to molecular genetics is a daunting
challenge that I enjoy confronting, so as to have a link between animals, genomics
and commercial developments.
Meeting
people informally at the CYO Tavern is a pleasant way of interacting with industry
and scientific people associated with the foundation.
Being
invited to meetings and learning new laboratory skills, leads to my satisfaction
in being able to increasingly contribute to CYO’s varied and interesting projects.
The
quarterly Retreats attended by eminent researchers and scientists from throughout
Australia, offer a unique opportunity for in depth discussions on a range of topics.
These forums arranged thematically, generate dynamic intercourse with participants
from a range of backgrounds, with all being able to offer their considered opinions.

CY
O’Connor ERADE Village Master Plan
Robyn Lindley
The vision
of building a village community around the CY O’Connor ERADE Foundation facilities
is now becoming a reality. The approved Village Master Plan is rapidly moving into
the development phase with site construction due to commence in 2010. The goal is
to build a community around the existing CYO ERADE Foundation research facilities
and infrastructure located in Canning Vale, just 18 kilometres south of Perth’s
CBD.
Further
development around the site will be the basis for an environment where employees
of the CY O’Connor ERADE Village Foundation and its partners can live and
work. The site already includes accommodation for researchers, specialist laboratory
facilities, offices and the

Village Tavern which opened in December 2008. The tavern provides a sports bar,
up-market dining facilities, and a bottle shop.
“Establish a community around a village in which courageous and innovative
spirits want to live.”
When the current
CY O’Connor ERADE master plan is completed, the village will be extended to
include a residential precinct consisting of 149 homes to attract people interested

education and research.
Services and facilities to nurture start-up businesses, pre-commercial developments,
and a wide range of home-based employment opportunities will be provided. The new
village community will incorporate a community network for sharing information among
community members and their families. A limited range of recreational facilities
will also be included such as cycle paths, cafés, a park, a small library and an
art gallery.
